Study Reminder – 1st Corinthians – Week 1

Let’s begin!

Today is the beginning of our study of the First Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians. This week, please read the introduction in your study guide of 1st Corinthians, read chapters 1 and 2, ponder the questions below, and answer the questions regarding these chapters in your study guide.  In addition, please share your thoughts and/or answers on the Week 1 page or on the LGB Facebook page.

Has the Church ever been in perfect harmony?  Probably not, since it is human nature to sin.  Therefore, right from the beginning of St. Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, we see that St. Paul is speaking to all of us . . . to the Church in Corinth as well as to all members of Christ’s Church throughout time.

  • While studying this letter, please ponder on your own faults and sins.  What is St. Paul saying to you?

In this first letter, St. Paul also addresses the pride that some of the members of the Church of Corinth have been showing.  They consider themselves wise.  However, wisdom comes from God.  Only God chooses who is wise by granting wisdom through the Holy Spirit.

  • How wise are you?  How advanced are you spiritually?
  • What relationship do you have with the Spirit?  Are you open to the Spirit’s guidance?
  • How can you enhance your wisdom?

Feedback and Next Study

Hello fellow bible study members!

I hope everyone had a very nice Christmas and that your New Year has started off well.

Our last bible study was on Advent.  What did you all think about it?  It differed from our typical bible study, where we studied a book of the bible.  Instead, it focused on the Sunday readings.  Did you like this format?  Should we look at doing this again next Advent?

We’ve had a break now since the Advent study.  Is everyone ready to look at starting a new study?

In regards to the next study, would you be open to studying The First and Second Letters of Saint Paul to the Corinthians?  I’ve been doing some research on them, and I like what I see. First Corinthians will give us a view of what struggles the early Church went through. Their struggles are similar to the same struggles we go through today.  St. Paul shares with us his wisdom on how to handle these struggles.  He also combats the vices of pride and selfishness, which also plague our society today.

In Second Corinthians, it will give us a better view of St. Paul the man and what he went through having people he brought to Christ to start turning away from him.  Who of us have had instances where are own proselytizing starting to look like it was falling apart and we were losing the people we were trying to bring closer to Christ?  In all, I think this book will be another good one for us to study.

Both of the Letters are in the same Ignatius Catholic Study Bible book.  So, for those who want a copy of the book, there will only be the one cost.

Please let me know what you thought of the Advent Study and if you like the idea of studying Corinthians next.  If there is another book of the bible you would like to recommend that the group study, please pass that on to me as well.

Thank you all and God bless,

Angie

I Love You!

Have you ever had anyone say “I love you” to you and you did not return the sentiment? Awkward!  What kept you from saying “I love you” back?  Were you wondering about the other person’s intentions?  Were you shocked that person could love YOU?  Are you unlovable?  Or, were you placed in a situation in which you could not return the sentiment, because you did not want to lie?  In other words, you do not love that person.

Now, ask yourself, have you ever returned the “I love you” back to God?  He says it to us all the time.  How often do you say it back?  If you have never said it to Him, why not?  Do you feel unlovable?  Do you question why God loves you?  Or, have you just never thought of saying “I love you” to God, since you show your love in other ways?

Recently, possibly within the past month or so, I’ve started to actually says those three words, “I love you,” to God at least during my evening prayers.  Oh wow!  I never would have guessed what feelings I’d have with just those three words!  It is awesome!  It is like I’ve always wanted to say this to Him, and now I’m free to do so.

What brought on this change has been an accumulation of things.  I’m constantly becoming closer and closer to God.  My yearning to be nearer to Him and to do His will grows as time goes by.  Naturally, as a result of this, the welling-up of feelings inside have erupted forth in this true sentiment of my affection to my Father.  I decided to come out with it and tell Him how I truly feel.

As with anyone you would say “I love you” to, I do not suggest rushing to say these three words to God until you truly feel them.  Because then, and only then, will their meaning resonate within your soul.  It is a defining moment, and not one to take lightly.  But when the time comes, and you are ready, please share this love with Our Father.  It is about time you return the sentiment!

This is the fourth and final week of Advent.  Please read Week IV in the Advent Study guide, answer the corresponding questions, and feel free to share with the group on the LGB website or Facebook page.

Rejoice Always. Pray Always. Give Thanks Always.

For those who know me and my family well know that we have been going through a difficult situation this past week.  My father-in-law had minor surgery that was not so minor for him.  He almost died.  The knowledge that a simple surgery for most people is not so simple for him was concern enough.  However, the waiting for information while sitting at the hospital during and then after his surgery was somewhat excruciating for those of us there.  However, thanks to God, he made it through and we made it through as well.

One thing stands out over this past week.  If it wasn’t for my faith, I don’t know what I would have done.  I REJOICED in knowing that if it was his time, he was in good hands and we were in good hands. I PRAYED often, requested others to pray for my father-in-law and our family, and found solace in these prayers.  I GAVE THANKS to God for every sliver of hope and improvement in my father-in-law’s condition.  These three things helped me through this whole ordeal.

REJOICE ALWAYS, PRAY ALWAYS, and GIVE THANKS ALWAYS.  In the reflection questions for this week’s readings, we are asked when there is a time in our lives when we were able to do this even though the circumstances were difficult.  This past week was a good example of when I did use these three directives and when these directives helped me. Please share your thoughts about this week’s material and/or the Reflection Questions. You can make a comment on this post’s page or on the Life Giving Bread Facebook page.

Joy and Hope

I am so thankful for Advent and Christmas.  Throughout the year, there are times when hours, days, and possibly weeks can go by without much thought about the joy and hope that Jesus’ coming offers.  However, during Advent, we are given weekly reminders when we light the Advent Wreath and/or hear the weekly readings at mass. For some of us, we may even do a daily Advent activity.  These are reminders that the light is increasing.  We are getting closer to Jesus’ return, either in this lifetime or in the next. Then, once Christmas arrives, oh! What joy!  We sing His praises, we rejoice in His coming, and we can truly feel His love.

The downside of this time of year, though, is the commercialism and materialism that takes place.  For me, I know there is no greater time of the year where I am torn between buying things for others out of love or just out of habit.  Plus, the season pushes me as a mother to set a good example for my children and to teach them over and over again the meaning of Advent and Christmas versus the view that they are bombarded with on TV and all around.

This can be a blessing, though.  It motivates me to step off “society’s train” and proclaim my beliefs and my values so that they are hopefully passed down through generations and spread throughout the world.  The trick is to accept the responsibility to do this.  To be the voice of God for our children and all those we meet.  To be the voice “crying out in the desert: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.'” To help them to learn the necessity to repent and prepare for His coming, and to spread to them the joy and hope that Jesus Christ brings. WHAT BETTER GIFT COULD WE GIVE?

I hope everyone enjoyed the first week of the Advent Study.  We are now beginning the second week which continues on the theme of preparing for Christ’s coming.  We will read about God’s mercy and His open arms to accept us back when we repent.  He does not want us to suffer.  He wants us to work towards preparing for His arrival, so that we will be at peace with Him at the end of times.

Thank you to Bob for his wonderful comments last week!  I hope and pray that more of you will feel the Spirit within you to share your thoughts as well.  However, if you are not the “sharing” type, don’t fret.  Knowing that you are participating by reading and studying along with us is just as important.

God bless you all!

Always Be Prepared

Today, I am reminded of the times when my sons would come home from school with a form to fill out regarding our safety devices and procedures at home.  These would include such things as: locate and count the smoke detectors in the house, find the fire-extinguishers, locate all possible exits, prepare an emergency kit, including flashlights, batteries, water, and energy bars, and discuss where the family members would meet in case of a fire or other disaster.  The purpose of these forms is to get the family talking about possible disasters and to make sure that we are prepared for them. However, these forms always left off one of the most important things for which we need to prepare.

Advent is also a time to prepare.  It is a time to prepare us for “the day of the Lord” when Christ will come to judge the living and the dead.  It is our job to be prepared for His inevitable arrival.  Unlike the disasters we try to prepare for which may never occur, this preparation WILL be put to the test.  We may never be tested by fire, tornado, or earthquake, but we WILL see Jesus, either when we die, or during His Second Coming. Either way, we WILL be judged by how well we prepared ourselves.  Are you prepared?

Starting today, we are beginning our Advent study using Catholic Scripture Study International’s Advent: Preparing for Christ, Cycle B by Cindy Morales.  This week, please read Week 1, pages 5-14. For those of you who do not have this book, there are several other ways to help prepare you for the Coming of Christ.  There are Advent books that allow you to pray and meditate daily.  I’ve found several at https://www.catholiccompany.com/advent-prayer-books-c1506/  Or, you can just set time aside everyday to think about the ways you are becoming holy and ways you can improve your holiness.  How you choose to prepare yourself isn’t the main concern.  What matters is that you are trying.  “Be watchful! Be alert!  You do not know when the time will come.” (Mark 13:33) It is important to prepare for potential disasters. However,  it is even more important to prepare for the inevitable coming of Christ. Let’s take on the Boy Scout motto and be prepared!

If you would like to share you thoughts regarding the “Questions for Reflection” as found in the Advent study guide or regarding any thoughts regarding your preparedness for the Coming of Christ, please share on the Life Giving Bread website or the Life Giving Bread Facebook page.

Books Have Arrived!

The Advent study books have arrived! For those that requested a copy, I will be contacting you to set up a time and place for me to give you your copy.

I have looked through the book, and I am really excited to begin this study.  Once you receive your copy, please read pages 1-3.  This will explain how the study will work with the exception that we will not be meeting, physically, as a group.  We will discuss the material via the Life Giving Bread website and/or Facebook page.  So, on page 3 of the Advent Study book, where it states “Be prepared to share your reflections in the larger group,” this sharing will take place online for whoever wishes to share.

The first day of Advent is this coming Sunday, November 30th.  Starting that day and continuing throughout all that week, please feel free to share your reflections on the LGB website or Facebook page.

A few notes:

  • The answers to the Study Questions are in the back of the book, if you would like to compare your answers.
  • The Questions for Reflection are at the end of each week’s material.  So for this first week, starting November 30th, we will discuss the three questions on page 14.

Advent is a time to prepare us for the Coming of Christ.  We are in darkness, with each week bringing us more light (think about the act of lighting one more candle each week on the Advent Wreath), until we finally reach Christmas and the full light of Christ!

Listen to the Only Voice That Matters

“Failure!  You failed!  Why do you even try?  Who do you think you are?  You are a failure!  Give up and go home!”  Does this sound familiar?  How many of you have a little voice in your head saying these types of things to you?

I admit.  I am not perfect.  (Hold the laughter please.)  At times, I hear a little voice in my head telling me things like the voice above.  What adds insult to injury is when others say these things to you too, which has also happened to me.   We are most critical of ourselves, so it is even more hurtful when the little voice in our heads is confirmed by others. Whether it is the little voice or real voices, it hurts.  For me, it brings me down.  It lessens my love for myself. I feel like a failure. Many of you probably feel the same way.

Yes, we will do things that are not good.  We will do things in which the end result is not what we expected.  We may even cause what we perceive as a “mess.”

The good thing is, we don’t need to listen to this voice or the voices in the world.  Yes, we will make mistakes and we need to learn from them.  We will do things that are not good, that don’t end in the results we expected, and/or cause what we perceive as a “mess.”  However, these things do not define who we are.  Just because the action or activity did not turn out good doesn’t mean we are not good.  We ARE loved by God.  That is the only thing that really matters.  And within this love is a great wealth of forgiveness.

“Like the prodigal (son) we need to be able to kneel, broken, before the Father, and allow his love and forgiveness to seep into us.  In a sense that is the sacrament of Reconciliation.  It is the empowering, accepting embrace of God.  It is in this embrace that God confesses.  The amazing thing about God’s confession is that it reveals that God believes in us far more than we will ever believe in God.  God believes in us far more than we will ever believe in ourselves.”  – Freedom and Forgiveness: A Fresh Look at the Sacrament of Reconciliation by Father Paul Farren.

Therefore, when you have done something that you are not happy about, when you are feeling down about yourself, please remember . . . Do not listen to the little voice in your head or to others.  LISTEN TO THE ONLY VOICE THAT MATTERS . . . GOD!  HE BELIEVES IN YOU!
